Okay!
So finally the King report is out. Judge Edwin King handed the South African
government his interim report into the country's match-fixing scandal on Friday.
He stressed that there were no final recommendations made.
According
to sources, it has been speculated that King would recommend a suspended life
ban for opening batsman Herschelle Gibbs. It's an open secret now that Gibbs,
Henry Williams and Pieter Strydom have each been suspended after admitting
during open hearings just this June to having accepted bribes of $15,000 from
Cronje to under-perform. Not just has Cronje got himself in big trouble but he
has been the cause for a lot of mud slinging on a lot many other cricketers too.
However, the three accused said under oath that they did not receive the money
as they had not done as told.
Talking
of Cronje, here's something on the side. He has admitted taking more than
$100,000 in bribes from bookies since 1996 but added that he had never thrown a
match. (Gosh! aren't we thankful to you for that, Mr. Cronje!) Cronje too is
expected to be recalled to the stand during the resumed hearings.
"I
will not make any recommendations at this stage as I will still have to hear
evidence from Hansie Cronje and others again,” said judge king. The 'King' was
also sure that measures would be taken to eradicate malpractices in cricket. As
they say - "The King knows it all
!
