Stewart lights up Lord's
England rose to the
occasion at Lord's to secure a six-wicket triumph over Zimbabwe in the NatWest Triangular
Series final. Darren Gough's three
wickets headed a diligent display in the field which restricted Zimbabwe to 169 for 7, and
victory was secured when Stewart exerted his authority with a magnificent 97 to delight
the home crowd. |
|
The defeat brings Zimbabwe's tour to an unsuccessful close but they were rarely
in realistic contention after England's economical
bowling reduced them to 31 for 4 and slowed their run rate to a crawl. Zimbabwe's first 50
runs required 148 deliveries and although
the Flower brothers bloomed with a priceless partnership of 89, a lack of support
undermined Zimbabwe's total.
It was impressive but insufficient as England stifled their opponents on an inviting pitch
before Stewart strode out to demonstrate his
enduring quality and secure England's third Lord's victory this season. |
